Auto Insurance Fraud Prevalent

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Bristol West Insurance has a link on their page to The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud website with some useful information for consumers discussing how prevalent auto insurance fraud really is.  One particular article discusses how even minor “fudging of details” can be considered fraud and ends up costing insurers and ultimately consumers a lot of money.

Auto insurance fraud is not only committed by hardened criminals or fraud rings.  Many normal and generally honest people commit fraud through leaving out or changing minor details.  Some people feel they are owed more because of all the premiums they have paid so they tell a little white lie to get a little extra money.  They feel it’s a small amount and won’t hurt anyone.  The truth is, with so many people thinking this way, the losses to the insurance companies can really add up and at this point the costs are passed on to the customers through higher auto insurance quotes.

Ask yourself if you may have fudged the details just a bit in your favor.  Here are some questions to determine if you may be guilty of insurance fraud.  Have you ever underestimated the amount of miles you drive to work?  Have you ever said you park your car in a garage when you do not?  Have you let an auto repair shop inflate your bill to recoup your deductible?  Have you ever inflated the value of items in your car or home when filing a claim?  These are just a few examples of minor fraud violations that add up and really do end up costing everyone more money.  When you know better, you do better so, ensure you are as accurate as possible with your insurance company.

Bristol West Insurance: Top Safety Pick Car for 2011

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Bristol West has a link to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website because driver safety is a priority to them.  Not only will driving safe keep your auto insurance quotes lower, but it keeps you and your family safe on the road.

An article posted on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website discusses the 2011 Top Safety Pick in their “Hyundai Equus Earns 2011 TOP SAFETY PICK Award” listing.  This luxury car earns this award for many reasons.  They actually earned this high rating across the board in the Institute’s safety evaluations.  The Equus was rated good for front, side, rollover and rear crash protection.  On top of this, it has electronic stability control which has become another requirement for earning the Institute’s highest rating.

In the rating for roof strength for rollover protection, the Equus withstood a force equal to 4.87 times the car’s weight.  This earns them a high rating as well since the current federal standard is 1.5 times a car’s weight.  Bristol West Insurance not only wants drivers to know about safe cars, but they hope lives can be saved through education.  As car makers compete for this honor, the hope is that vehicles will become safer and safer over time.  Many auto insurance companies take car safety into consideration when they calculate an insurance quote because someone is less likely to be severely injured in a very safe car.

Auto Insurance Brokers

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Many companies that offer auto insurance have brokers such as Bristol West Insurance.  When trying to decide if you are going to go through an auto insurance agent or broker it’s important to understand the differences.  There are a few differences between the two and it can make a difference in your overall experience.

Bristol West takes pride that both their agents and brokers are quality and can be trusted.  This may be true but not all companies may have this benefit.  The differences between brokers and agents differs from state to state, but in general, an auto insurance agent will write a policy for a customer on behalf of a broker or company and the broker will simply write the policy on behalf of the customer.

A broker is allowed to have agents under them and often times they own their own auto insurance company.  Brokers tend to be more heavily regulated since they carry more responsibility to this can be to your advantage.  They typically have a strong history of experience and are very knowledgeable in the field.  This can help you make the best decision as you shop around for auto insurance, but be sure you are comparison shopping.  Rates can vary greatly from broker to broker and insurance company to insurance company.  Some brokers will shop around for you, but it doesn’t hurt to do some additional work to ensure you are getting the very best deal you can.

Bristol West Insurance Fraud

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Bristol West Auto Insurance, along with many other auto insurance companies are getting hit with fraudulent claims.  According to the article “Report: Staged Car Wrecks On the Rise” by James Hart on blogs.kansascity.com, there has been a 40% jump in car accidents since 2007 staged on purpose with the sole purpose of ripping off insurers like Bristol West.  This statistic comes from a report from The National Crime Insurance Bureau.

Many of the fraud accidents are committed by all knowing parties, but sometimes the perpetrators target innocent drivers.  To avoid becoming a target, follow these simple tips:

  • Avoid tailgating
  • Always call the police immediately if you are involved in an accident
  • Use your phone camera to document any damage as soon as it happens
  • Never admit fault

Protecting yourself on the road is very important and knowing this type of fraud is going on can help you be more prepared if you are involved in an accident.  Avoiding the accident altogether is obviously ideal so your car insurance quotes are not affected.

Auto Insurance Quotes: Where Are They the Highest?

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Auto insurance quotes vary greatly from state to state.  According to the article “Where Auto Insurance Is Most Expensive” by Jennifer Saranow Schultz on nytimes.com, Louisiana has the highest average auto insurance in the US and Maine has the lowest.  This data was accumulated by insure.com, which ranked the states based on average auto insurance rates.

This data was released this week and comes from a study completed by Quadrant Information Services which looked for the most and least expensive car to insure across the country.  The information determined average auto insurance quotes for over 2400 cars from the 2010 model year from 6 large companies across 10 zip codes in every state.  This also enabled auto insurance rates in general to be compared from state to state.

It’s surprising how dramatically auto insurance rates can vary from state to state.  Insure.com says the varying laws from state to state is partly to blame.    Regardless of how good someone’s driving record is, a portion of your rates are at the mercy of your states’ insurance laws.  Shopping around is your best bet at getting comparison quotes.  Even smaller companies such as Bristol West Insurance can offer competitive rates.

Ban on Cell Phone Use in Many States

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Bristol West Insurance has a link on their page to some very interesting articles on highwaysafety.org.  One of the articles discusses thoroughly bans on cell phone usage while driving.  It’s become a hot topic as Oprah is trying very hard to get all Americans to sign pledges agreeing not to use their phone while driving.  Lives can be saved and more and more states are recognizing this and putting it in the law books.

Currently there is a jurisdiction wide ban on driving while talking on a hand-held phone in 7 states which include California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah, Washington DC and Washington state.  In addition, many localities have placed restrictions on cell phone use, including Oprah’s hometown of Chicago, IL.

Text message is a newer phenomenon and texting while driving is even more dangerous as it takes drivers’ eyes off the road for a period of time.  Text messaging is currently banned in 20 states and Washington DC and that number is expected to rise as more and more studies show how dangerous it really is.  The use of cell phone for those driving a school bus is prohibited in only 17 states and Washington DC.  That seems like an obvious ban that should be placed everywhere.

Don’t be surprised if it becomes law across the nation that cell phone use while driving is restricted.  Already, car insurance quotes can be affected if you have been caught in an accident while on your phone.  It’s a very wise practice to get in the habit of even if your area currently has no restrictions.  Find a safe place to pull over if using your phone is absolutely necessary while you are on the road.

Steps to Take When You Need to File a Claim

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Getting into an accident is a very stressful situation, whether it’s your fault or not.  It’s important to ensure that you know what to do in the case of an auto accident and even more important to remain calm.  The article “5 Steps to Filing Your Auto Insurance Claim” by Bobbie Sage on About.com discusses some key points to remember if you are in an auto accident.

First, evaluate if you actually need to file a claim.  If the damage is minor and you can pay for it out of pocket without any financial stress that may be the way to go to keep your driving record clean.  Second, document every detail of the accident to be sure you have the information to give your insurer if need be.  If deemed necessary, file your claim as soon as possible.  Most auto insurance companies, including Bristol West Insurance, are available 24 hours a day, every day to receive your claim information.

Be sure to prepare for a call from the insurance company of the other driver involved.  There may end up being a dispute in which case you will need to have all your information available.  Once your claim has been accepted you may get a visit from an insurance adjuster to access the damage and let you know where you can go to get your car fixed.  Getting in an accident is a complicated mess many times, but it doesn’t have to be.  Being prepared is the first step to a smooth resolution.
