Donegal Insurance Feels Effects From Storms

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Many insurance companies across the nation felt the harsh effects of the spring storms throughout April and May including Donegal Insurance.  Donegal Group, INC, expects to feel a $13 million to $15 million hit in the 2nd quarter from all of the recent claims brought upon by the devastating storms the swept the mid-west and affecting many areas of the US.

The article “Donegal Sees $13M-$15M Effect From Claims” by Tim Stuhldreher on CentralPennBusiness.com points out that claims of about $7 million to $8 million will be paid due to mid-Atlantic hail and storm damages and another $4 million to $5 million paid to the South due to the tornadoes that hit this area.  Another $2 million is going to the mid-west for wind and hail.

Donegal plans on covering additional losses through their reinsurance programs.  This is to help the blow of the loss be less painful.  Their subsidiaries will give about $3 million to keep their reinsurance coverage throughout the rest of 2011.  Many companies have felt the impact of all of these home and auto insurance claims, but Donegal remains positive that they are handling the situation and their preparation for such events has paid off.

Ohio Auto Insurance Claims Up From Storms

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

State Auto Financial is an Ohio auto insurance and property/casualty insurance company and they saw a huge influx of claims throughout Ohio and the rest of the mid-west in May due to devastating storms.  They expect a pre-tax loss of around $45 million to $50 million from the storms throughout May.  Three specific catastrophes affected 23 of the states they operate in, including the massive tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri on May 22nd.  Auto insurance claims as well as property claims from tornadoes, wind and hail poured in quickly in a very short period of time.

State Auto plans on having over 9000 claims on cars and homes filed throughout the coming months due to the storms.  They confirmed previously that $75 million to $85 million in losses were experienced from April storms.  Before 2011, State Auto’s historic 5 year average loss ratio for the 2ndQ is around $50 million of losses so they are feeling a huge impact from these storms.  Bob Restrepo, State Auto Financial president and chairman CEO said that these storms continued a deadly pattern of destruction throughout the mid-west.

The article “State Auto Financial Expects May Catastrophe Loss Up To $50m” found on claims.insurance-business-review.com points out that State Auto employees are working endlessly to respond to claims quickly and efficiently in the best effort to help out struggling victims.  Some agents who even lost their offices due to storms are working to help customers through this tough time.

Founders Auto Insurance From an Agent

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Many people wonder if using an agent is the best way to purchase auto insurance.  It’s true that using an agent can save you some time and possibly save you some money.  If you aren’t internet savvy, then using an agent may be the way to go.  Many companies offer agents to help customers with their needs.  One of these companies is Founders Insurance.

Founders auto insurance is offered in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin with limits up to $100,000/300,000/50,000.  They offer quick, electronic SR22 filing and take international and out-of-state drivers license.  According to their website, Founders Insurance is a preferred choice of agents for higher risk policies.  Whether you have a poor driving record, poor credit rating, or coverage lapses, Founders will work with you to try to get you the best coverage possible.  This is where an agent can come in especially handy.  High-risk drivers often have a harder time finding quality auto insurance online or on their own.  An agent knows where to look to get deals for non-preferred customers.

Founders Insurance also has complete online capabilities including quoting, binding, and policy issuance, payments, endorsements, document reprinting, renewals, claim reporting and form downloads.  You can even chat online or over the phone with an underwriter with any questions you may have about your policy and quote.  Founders works hard to have state-of-the-art imaging systems for underwriting and claim handling and are constantly working to improve their business.  Speak with an agent to see if this might be the right option for you.

State Farm Auto Insurance Profit Doubles

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

We haven’t been hearing too much about the successes of a variety of industries during this economic downtown, but good news out there for some auto insurance companies.  According to the article “State Farm Profit Double” found on KansasCity.com, State Farm seems to be doing pretty well.

State Farm Auto Insurance Co., the largest US home and car insurance company, reported full-year profit more than doubled as underwriting losses were narrowed.  Net income for the year 2010 increased to $1.8 billion from $777 million the previous year.  The insurance company is owned by policyholders and reports results every year.

Chief Executive Officer Ed Rust leads State Farm which was helped by some debt relief and equity markets as well as a relatively mild hurricane season.  A rebound policy sales overall in addition to an increase in personal auto and home coverage rose revenue at US property-casualty insurers.  As we start 2011, State Farm expects to continue doing well and is working hard to ensure this is the case.  In today’s economic environment, this is great to hear.

Ohio Auto Insurance Verification Program

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

According to the press release “Legislators Take Aim at Ohio Auto Insurance Verification Program” found on OnlinePRNews.com, Ohio state representative Matt Huffman re-introduced a bill that would stop an auto insurance verification program given by the state of Ohio.

The Random Selection program has sent out letters to car owners who are asked to mail in proof of auto insurance to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles since 1998.  The point of the program was to cut down on the number of uninsured drivers on the road.  If the person did not respond within 90 days their license was suspended and they had to pay a fine.  Based on a report from the Columbus Dispatch, approximately 5400 letters were sent out weekly and about 500 of those did not carry auto insurance.

The Insurance Research Council says that about 16% of Ohio drivers were uninsured in 2007 and that number is believed to have risen since unemployment has risen steadily throughout the state.  This may mean that the verification program is not effective in which case the BMV could save a lot of time and money by cutting back on the program.  Rep Huffman advised a panel that there were some unfair instances related to the mailings and this type of problem could be resolved fixing or eliminating the program.

Progressive Auto Insurance Named A Top Employer

Monday, December 13th, 2010

According to their website, Progressive Auto Insurance has been named one of G.I. Jobs Magazine’s Top 100 Military Friendly Employers.  This is huge recognition for the auto insurance company that works hard to ensure their military employers are well taken care of.

Active-duty Reservists who are employed by Progressive receive 100% differential pay and their health insurance remains in effect while they are on duty.  Chris Humlicek, Progressive’s military recruitment director, says they value the experience of military veterans and recruit at military job boards, job fairs, and in military publications.  They find that veterans do very well at Progressive because they’re able to adapt to changes, understand objectives and lead teams.  It’s great to see that major, successful companies are doing the right thing to show military men and women the respect they deserve.

G.I. Jobs Magazine ranks 100 companies every year on criteria, including military hiring practices, benefits, pay policies, veteran training programs, and military recruitment programs.  They compile the list from over 5000 entrants, and only companies with over $500 million in revenue were able to compete.

Ohio Auto Insurance

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

The recent earthquake in Ontario, Canada was felt throughout many states in the US, including Vermont, New York, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.  It was a reminder of the vulnerability of the US to this type of the disaster according to the article found on insurancenewsnet.com from a news release by The Insurance Institute.

Earthquakes are not covered under standard US homeowners insurance policies nor auto insurance policies.  Cars and other vehicles may be covered under an optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy.  Ohio auto insurance and companies such as Eastwood Insurance may have various options for you to look into.

Earthquake insurance policies usually carry a deductible in the form of a percent rather than a dollar amount.  The deductible range can vary anywhere from 2% to 20% of the building’s replacement value.  Earthquake insurance rates differ greatly from state to state and company to company.  Several factors are considered such as location, construction materials, and how close a structure is to a fault line.  If you think you may be at risk look into what options are available with your insurance provider.

Ohio Auto Insurance Quotes Continue to Decrease

Friday, December 4th, 2009

According to the article “Auto Premiums In Ohio Decline for Third Consecutive Year” found on insurancejournal.com, Ohio has the 11th lowest auto insurance rates in the US in 2007.  This is an improvement from its ranking the year before at 13th.  This is great news for Ohio drivers as they shop for Ohio auto insurance quotes.

The Ohio Department of Insurance recently reported that rates in the state have been on the decline for the past 3 years based on the 2006/2007 Auto Insurance Database information.  This was released by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.  The Ohio Department of Insurance Director, Mary Jo Hudson, believes that Ohio has a healthy and competitive auto insurance market which drives costs down and benefits consumers.

Analysts from the Department of Insurance expect auto insurance rates to slightly increase in 2010 across the country according to the article.  Changes in the costs of auto insurance are due to higher repair costs, soaring medical expense costs, claims related to weather, and the number of drivers who are out on Ohio roads.
