Auto Insurance Fraud Prevalent

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Bristol West Insurance has a link on their page to The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud website with some useful information for consumers discussing how prevalent auto insurance fraud really is.  One particular article discusses how even minor “fudging of details” can be considered fraud and ends up costing insurers and ultimately consumers a lot of money.

Auto insurance fraud is not only committed by hardened criminals or fraud rings.  Many normal and generally honest people commit fraud through leaving out or changing minor details.  Some people feel they are owed more because of all the premiums they have paid so they tell a little white lie to get a little extra money.  They feel it’s a small amount and won’t hurt anyone.  The truth is, with so many people thinking this way, the losses to the insurance companies can really add up and at this point the costs are passed on to the customers through higher auto insurance quotes.

Ask yourself if you may have fudged the details just a bit in your favor.  Here are some questions to determine if you may be guilty of insurance fraud.  Have you ever underestimated the amount of miles you drive to work?  Have you ever said you park your car in a garage when you do not?  Have you let an auto repair shop inflate your bill to recoup your deductible?  Have you ever inflated the value of items in your car or home when filing a claim?  These are just a few examples of minor fraud violations that add up and really do end up costing everyone more money.  When you know better, you do better so, ensure you are as accurate as possible with your insurance company.

Compare Auto Insurance: Pays Off For the Young

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

It’s generally recommended that everyone should compare auto insurance quotes when shopping for a policy, but new research shows that it pays of big time for drivers under the age of 25.  According to the article “Price Comparisons Pay Off for Yonnger Drivers” by The News Tribune, average premiums vary from insurer to insurer but the difference is very large when you are a young driver.  Des Toups, senior managing editor at the CarInsurance website says the difference is massive.

As an example, a 55 year old man can save an average of $456 a year by shopping multiple auto insurance companies, whereas a driver under 25 can save about $1102.  This is an extremely large difference that young drivers should be aware of.  One reason premium quotes vary so much for young people is their driving record.  They often are a question mark and this can be a major driver of auto insurance quotes when shopping around.  Young drivers don’t have a track record yet to prove they are good drivers and each insurer has its own method of determining the risk of these drivers.

There doesn’t seem to be a consensus of what ultimately matters or not.  Some see good grades as a factor while other insurers do not.  There are many factors that go into determining an auto insurance quote and it’s hard to tell for a young driver what will drive the quote the most.  So shop around and compare quotes, especially if you are young with a limited driving record.

Auto Insurance Quotes for the Poor

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Nevada auto insurance quotes are too expensive for many residents in the state, and Assemblyman Kelvin Atkinson saw the need for the poor to get some help.   According to the article “Opposition Emerges to Bill Offering Low-Cost Auto Insurance to Poor” by Cy Ryan on The Las Vegas Sun website, Atkinson developed a bill to begin a low-cost auto insurance program for those living below poverty level in Clark County.

Although his intentions are good, Atkinson is meeting with some opposition to the bill from the Republicans.  Sen. Michael Roberson, R-Las Vegas isn’t for the bill stating that a similar plan has been tried in California and is not working.  Other Senators such as Sen. Mike Schneider, chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Labor and Energy appreciates what the bill is trying to accomplish and sees the need to help the working poor afford auto insurance quotes.

The bill proposed by Atkinson would offer auto insurance at lower costs for those 250% below poverty level.  The State Insurance Division said approximately only 1000 drivers would sign up for such a program.  Joe Guild from Farmers Insurance said the bill would probably only save a driver $50 on a policy which may not make an impact.  With the uninsured motorist population at 19% according to the SAGE Commission, something needs to be done.  Rates have continued to increase making it harder and harder for the poor to afford to have proper coverage.

Car Insurance Quotes: Make Them Drop

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Most car insurance companies, including Progressive and American Commerce, have their own calculation for determining car insurance quotes.  You may feel like the rate you end up paying is out of your control but that isn’t necessarily the case.  There are numerous factors insurers use that are within your control and knowing what they are can help you save money.

The biggest factor is often driving record, and although you cannot do anything about the past, you can control your future driving habits and wait until previous driving violations fall of your records, which they eventually do.  You can have a clean slate with a little patience and careful driving practices.  Another big one these days is credit rating.  Again, the past is the past, but derogatory marks fall off your file in about 7 years, and focusing on paying your bills on time and keeping your debt levels down will pay off in the long run.

Of course what type of car you drive is going to have a huge impact on your car insurance quotes.  In general, the more expensive the car the higher your quotes will be.  Take a serious look at how big of a car you need, and how important luxury really is considering the overall costs.  Not only will that actual car cost more money, but maintenance and insurance will be higher.  The extra money can add up to a lot over the years.

And make sure you are shopping around for the best rate.  Just because one car insurance company gives you a hefty price, doesn’t mean they all will.  Get at least 3-4 quotes, if not more, and compare any trends you may see.  You’ll also want to make sure your coverage is sufficient and meets your needs.

Compare Auto Insurance In California: Ranked 29th

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

California auto insurance has had its ups and downs with auto insurance rates, and for 2011, California ranks 29th in auto insurance affordability according to the article from Mark Glover of The Sacramento Bee.  This was based on a new report released by InsWeb Corp.  This is actually an improvement from their ranking last year which was 34 in the Car Insurance Affordability Index survey.

In order to rank the states in their affordability, InsWeb looked closely at all 50 states and Washington DC.  InsWeb compared household incomes with the average auto insuance costs throughout the state to determine affordability.  For the 2nd year in a row, Massachusetts came in first place with a factor of 2.09%.  Louisiana came in last place with a factor of 6.76%.  California had a factor of 3.34% which was pretty close to average.

Being in one of the more expensive states for auto insurance makes it even more important to compare auto insurance online, or through an agent.  Rates can vary significantly from insurance company to insurance company.  They will look at many factors including location, driving record, and car make.  If you think you are paying too much for auto insurance shop around to make some comparisons.

Auto Insurance for Your Teen Driver

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

In many states teenagers can receive their drivers license at age 16 once they have passed a written test as well as a driving test.  At this point you will need to look into auto insurance for your new driver.  Many auto insurers such as Progressive and Acceptance Insurance offer policies to these young drivers, but rates may be higher and if you add the driver onto your existing policy you can expect to see your premium increase, in some cases relatively drastically.

You can see your auto insurance rates come down over the years with your teen on your policy by encouraging good grades which can earn discounts and demanding safe driving habits.  The Department of Motor Vehicles in various states offer teen driving education from everything like passing the written test to the importance of never drinking and driving.  There are online tools for your Internet savvy teen to browse articles and online quizzes to help educate your child on safety guidelines on the road.

Many auto insurance companies also offer online programs for teens.  USAA Auto Insurance explains to your student how to buy a car as well as how to handle distractions while driving.  State Farm has launched a unique campaign called “Not Now, I’m Driving” (NNID) which has teen-friendly YouTube videos and messages from famous actors sending the message about the importance of never texting while driving.  Allstate and Geico also have programs geared towards making your teen a safer driver which will hopefully save lives and as a nice perk, hopefully facilitate lower auto insurance rates for you over time.

Auto Insurance Quotes Down, Driving Costs Up

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

The American Automobile Association (AAA) released its 2011 Your Driving Costs research which indicated that the price of auto insurance quotes on a sedan is down 6.1% but driving costs overall increased by about 3.4% since last year.

The AAA report shows that the average annual auto insurance premium for a sedan is $968 which is down $63 from 2010 according to the article “AAA: Insurance Costs Down, Overall Driving Costs Up in 2011″ by Matthew Morisset on the Online Auto Insurance News Team.  This decline cancels out the auto insurance increase from 2010.  The 2010 report showed that policy costs had gone up by 5.7% from 2009.

The insurance costs were based on a 47 year old man with a good driving record and drives between 3-10 miles each day.  The coverage for this sample policy included adequate coverage of $100,000/$300,000 with a $500 deductible for collision and a $100 deductible for comprehensive coverage.  This gives an average look of what a common policy price looks like for an individual but would obviously vary if the coverage, mileage or age were different.

The average yearly costs to own and operate a sedan is $8776 based on 15,000 miles per year.  This number actually increased from 2011 most likely due to the rise in gas prices, the costs of tires and the increase in depreciation rates.  A variety of cost categories were looked at including auto insurance, fees for licensing, taxes, finance charges, depreciation, gas, maintenance and tires.

Florida Auto Insurance Quotes: Bills Going Through

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

According to the article “Florida Senate Panel Advances Auto Insurance Bills” by Brent Kallestad on Business Week’s website, two Florida bills aimed at cutting down the amount of fraud running rampant through Florida moved passed an important Senate panel.  The Senate Banking and Insurance Committee barely approved the bills after some debate between lawmakers.

Legislature is trying to get a handle of the amount of auto insurance fraud that is frustrating insurers enormously.  The bills move forward after being backed by the insurance industry which would give them more power to deny claims they deem suspicious for fraud.  A similar bill is moving through the Senate as well.  Florida auto insurance quotes are impacted by the amount of fraud going through the state, so hopefully as fraud decreases so will auto insurance quotes Florida.

The bills are guaranteed to pass.  Mark Cedarberg, an Orlando lawyer, cautions lawmakers about giving the insurance companies too much freedom.  He believes that if the bills pass it will make it harder on honest people, including honest doctors who need to be paid.  Once an auto insurance company decides to deny a claim it will be challenging to get it reversed.  Insurers, medical providers, and lawyers all agree that fraud is too prevalent, but they can’t agree on the best solution to fix the problem just yet.

Bristol West Insurance: Top Safety Pick Car for 2011

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Bristol West has a link to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website because driver safety is a priority to them.  Not only will driving safe keep your auto insurance quotes lower, but it keeps you and your family safe on the road.

An article posted on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website discusses the 2011 Top Safety Pick in their “Hyundai Equus Earns 2011 TOP SAFETY PICK Award” listing.  This luxury car earns this award for many reasons.  They actually earned this high rating across the board in the Institute’s safety evaluations.  The Equus was rated good for front, side, rollover and rear crash protection.  On top of this, it has electronic stability control which has become another requirement for earning the Institute’s highest rating.

In the rating for roof strength for rollover protection, the Equus withstood a force equal to 4.87 times the car’s weight.  This earns them a high rating as well since the current federal standard is 1.5 times a car’s weight.  Bristol West Insurance not only wants drivers to know about safe cars, but they hope lives can be saved through education.  As car makers compete for this honor, the hope is that vehicles will become safer and safer over time.  Many auto insurance companies take car safety into consideration when they calculate an insurance quote because someone is less likely to be severely injured in a very safe car.
