South Carolina auto insurance laws require a minimum of 25/50/25 coverage. This means that you must carry $25 thousand per person for bodily injury, $50 thousand per accident, and $25 thousand for personal property damage. If you carry less than this amount of insurance, or no insurance at all, and you are pulled over or involved in an accident, you will face substantial fines and other penalties. If a law enforcement official requests proof of insurance and you fail to provide it, you will be issued a ticket immediately and you will face the risk of being arrested and thrown in jail. If you cannot offer proof of insurance when it is requested, you will have fifteen days from the date of your ticket (or your accident) to provide evidence of insurance. If you cannot rectify the situation during this period of time, your license will be suspended indefinitely. Should your South Carolina auto insurance policy be cancelled for any reason, your insurance company is obligated to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to notify them of your uninsured status. You will receive a notification that your insurance information needs to be updated. If you cannot, or do not, update your information, your alternative is to surrender your vehicle registration and license plates to the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you do not respond to this notice or refuse to comply, your license and registration will be suspended. To have your license reinstated, the fee can be as much as $400.

South Carolina's Strategic Highway Safety Plan, The Road Map to Safety, asserts that its mission is to "develop, implement and manage an integrated multi-stakeholder process to improve highway safety". The goals of the plan include fatality reduction, injury reduction, and safety resources support and development. In addition to regular motor vehicle traffic safety, the South Carolina Department of Transportation confronts transportation safety issues including evacuation routes, emergency response, construction updates, highway policies, bridge issues, mass transit and resurfacing roads. The most important thing you can do, as a driver, is act responsibly when operating a motor vehicle. The first step in being a safe driver is protecting yourself and others by investing in South Carolina auto insurance.
